If you are thinking of making extra income from blogging, then you’re going to need to find ways to monetize your blogs (make money) from the traffic that comes your way.

What is Blogging?

A blog is an abbreviation of “Weblog“, and the concept originally began with individuals posting up personal journals online for others to read.

Over time blogging has evolved. Not only are people blogging about personal life experiences and sharing their views on life, but they are also blogging about hobbies, areas of interest and expertise, products, services and much more.

Many companies and organizations also blog.  Blogs aren’t limited to weblogs either. Video blogs (Vlogs) on Youtube and other channels are also popular forms of delivery.

Can you blog?  Well, If you are already posting things on social media channels like Facebook or Instagram, then you are already “micro-blogging” in a manner of speaking. Anybody can blog.

How do I make money from a Blogging?

There are several ways you can earn money from a blog.  You could sell physical or digital products, courses or e-books.  Blogs with a high volume of traffic can attract sponsorship or advertisements.

However, the area I’m going to focus on for generating extra income is by affiliate marketing

Why Affiliate Marketing? The main reason is that it is something you can start monetizing your blog with immediately and is relatively easy to set up.

Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate Marketing is where you earn money from a company by referring people to them who buy their products or services.

Thousands of companies run affiliate programs and people earn money by sending customers to their websites. When a customer buys a product or service from the company, the person (the affiliate) who sent them will get paid a commission.

I’ve written some short guides if you wish to learn more about the mechanics of how it works with a few examples.

The guide also provides advice on picking a niche (specialist) area to cover for your blog and where you can find affiliate programs to sign up for.

How do I set up a Blog?

The technical side of setting up a Blog is surprisingly straightforward.  There are various blogging platforms to choose from. The most popular platform is WordPress.  WordPress powers over a third of all websites on the entire Internet.  It is also widely regarded as the de facto standard platform for Blogging.

To run a blog website based on WordPress you will need two things:

a) A Domain Name: This is your unique website name. It’s worth having a personal brainstorm to decide what domain name to pick.  Some bloggers use their own name, others use domain names relevant to the kind of specialist area they are going to be blogging about.

b) Web Hosting: This is where your site is stored online and connected to the Internet.

I have written a guide on how to set up an affiliate marketing website blog.  Click here for access.

Hey, I’m Owen, an affiliate marketer, blogger, sports fan + Dad of 3.

I’m joining the dots between affiliate marketing, blogging, tech and sales funnels to find best practice. Let’s connect:

Affiliate Disclosure: I NEVER recommend a product or service that I don’t personally use, love or buy myself, but just to be totally transparent you should know that some of the links on my site ARE affiliate links and I DO make a small commission from any sales that are made. Thanks for your support!
